Never overexpose a photo again: Exposing for the highlights.
In every photograph there are highlights (brightly lit areas) and shadows (dark areas). Generally speaking you want to be able to see some detail everywhere, but particularly the bright areas. Because while it doesn’t really matter if the dark areas of an image are completely black (it just adds to the drama!) – if the detail in the bright areas is lost there is just nothing there at all, which just plain doesn’t look good.
